|
An
early healthy breakfast at the Del Mar Restaurant. Once expeditionaries
have explored the forts and streets of Colonial Campeche,
they will be eager to see other fascinating sites. Depart
for Palenque located in the state of Chiapas and enjoy the
view of the Gulf of Mexico, during the drive. Arrive at Palenque
and check in to the lovely jungle clad Hotel the Chan-Kah
were you will have lunch. After lunch a late afternoon visit
to Palenque.
Palenque, ("Bakal-Ham" Plenty of water")was
one of the most important Classic cities of the Maya World,
reaching the peak of its influential power in the late classic
period, between 600 and 900 AD, in this great city, still
partially hidden by the jungle, Maya architecture reached
its highest levels of quality as seen is such buildings. Palenque
is certainly one of the most beautiful of the Maya sites.
The tomb of the great ruler, Lord Pakal, was hidden deep inside
the Temple of Inscriptions.
Palenque is unusual in having almost no carved monuments,
but stucco sculptures depicting the city's royalty decorate
many of the buildings while lengthy hieroglyphic texts can
be found on tablets inside the palaces and temples. The three
temples in the Group of the Cross are the most magnificent
buildings in the city. Built high on the side of a mountain,
these beautifully decorated sanctuaries dominate the site.
In their interiors, massive, finely carved hieroglyphic panels
tell the history of the kings and the glorification of their
gods. Early evening back to our hotel were you can enjoy a
swim in the pool filled with fresh crystal spring water. Overnight.
