At
one side of the main plaza in this town, the remains of a pyramidal
mound in four sections can be seen. The architecture is a mixture
of the Guatemalan Petén style of the Early Classic Period
(300-900 A.D.) manifested in the shelf-type moldings and embedded
central stairway, together with the Teotihuacan style from the High
Plains area, characterized by features such as the talud (slope)
and tablero (panel). During the 1998 explorations, five huge stucco
masks were found, which probably represent deities or important
rulers.
