The
broad pre Hispanic city that is in the present days known as Calakmul,
Maya name that means "Two Adjacent monticules" (ca-two,
lak-adjacent, mul-artificial monticules or pyramids), was first
reported by the American explorer Cyrus Lundell in the late 1931.
Ever since several explorations works have been held with the purpose
of finding out its extension, origin and history of this Maya settlement.Today
we know that during the years 250 to 750 A.D., Calakmul was a center
named "Kingdom of the serpent's head". It linked several
sites of the Maya Lowlands, such as Peru, Dos Pilas and Naranjo
among others, besides Caracol, the last one in the 500's, the main
allied of Calakmul in the battles with its worst rival: the great
Tikal. When "Garra de Jaguar" (Jaguar's Paw) died, one
of its main governors, and whwn being defeated by Tikal, in Calakmul
conflicts arise and the lineage struggle for power was evident.
Because of Tikal's influence, the next governor re oriented the
kingdom's politics of the serpent's head holding a close relationship
with the northern neighbors, especially with the Rio Bec area. From
this fact Calakmul emerged again enduring until the year 1000 A.D.
