The
city of Mayapan was the most important center of the Maya civilization
in the period previous to the arrival of the Spanish (1250-1450
a.C.). Mayapan's
about 4 square kilometers and as most of the Mayan sites it consists
on one central plaza in which the main buildings are located.
One
special feature is that the main buildings are delimitated by a
wall, clear hint of the unstable situation of the zone. Due to the
quantity of the concentrated buildings and some other details it
is now considered that the city had about 12,000 inhabitants.
According
to some legends, Mayapan was founded by Kukulcan, which reigned
during some time and after that the main leaders formed a joined
government. The
native chronicles point that Mayapan, Uxmal and Chichen Itza formed
a political alliance known as the Mayapan league.
